Facebook’s servers should provide them, but the phone book is in effect blank. With Facebook down, however, that system is not working: the computer searches for the numbers it wants to see, but the numbers aren’t there. When a user types in a web address – such as – then the computer needs to turn that into a an IP address, which is a series of numbers, so that it can access the data that makes up the page you want to see. This time around, at least some of the problems are related to the domain name system, or DNS, which works something like a phone book for the internet. Following the incident the company would only say that the problems were "a result of a server configuration change". However, when Facebook suffered major outage in September 2019, affecting a large number of users, it took the firm more than 24 hours until they claimed it was resolved. This was followed by her retweeting MalwareTech Twitter account which claimed the outage were "all down to a BGP configuration error". Tech reporter Sheera Frenkel said she spoke to one worker who revealed how they could not even access the physical systems "because their badges weren't working to access doors", suggesting a much more dramatic kind of outage at the company. The outages for all three systems - all owned by Facebook Inc - began shortly after 5.15pm today, with all three media platforms ironically having to take to 'rival' Twitter to announce that "some people" were having trouble accessing the apps and engineers were "working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible". Users of social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp remain in the dark about why their favourite online haunts collapsed this evening.
